Slapstick Festival is launching a brand new event in partnership with The Room Above Theatre at the White Bear and BFI: Stranger Films.

Discover the crazy world of early cinema with stand-up comedian, animator and video games writer Alasdair Beckett-King – named by Rolling Stone magazine as an unmissable act at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe, a favourite on Mock the Week and a YouTuber with more than 250K followers. Films and clips line-up from the eccentric early pioneers of film comedy, including; Charley Bowers, George Melies and Ladislaw Starewicz. This night aims to showcase the absurdly alternative comedy that paved the way for your favourite slapstick movies and physical comedians today.
You never know what to expect in these hilarious archival films, but we can tease with the fabulous Dancing Pig and delightfully funny scenes from Laurel and Hardy as they fight a crab 40 floors up on a scaffold.

Come early or stay on to enjoy some further strangeness downstairs in the White Bear Pub

Bristol’s annual Slapstick is one of the world’s biggest festivals of screen comedy - dedicated to preserving and presenting classic silent comedy films and also inviting in many of today’s best- known stand-ups and comedy actors to chat about the inspiration they’ve gained from the movies and performers. Stranger Films is a new Slapstick venture, curated in association with hugely popular The Room Above comedy club, to bring the rich, varied and laugh-out-loud world of slapstick cinema to younger audiences. Come along for a night of wacky films, live performance and, of course, a well-stocked bar. Then sign-up to join the Slapstick festival’s free mailing list so that you’re kept aware of what else Slapstick offers.
